What you need to know about Spartan Hockey

• Michigan State gets its first taste of a road series this weekend when it heads west to Notre Dame for the Big Ten openers for both teams.  The Spartans lead Notre Dame in the all-time meetings by a 66-56-15 margin, and the Irish hold a 31-26-10 mark in games played in South Bend.  Links for live radio broadcasts are above, and the webstream will be on NBC's streaming platform, Peacock.

•  Michigan State's penalty kill (.870) ranks second in the B1G and 11th nationally, allowing three extra-man markers in 23 chances.  The Spartans did not allow a power play goal to LIU (0-8) and has extinguished its last nine chances against overall.   MSU is averaging 9.17 penalty minutes per game, second fewest in the B1G.  MSU's power play scored four times on seven chances vs. LIU in Saturday's game, improving its power play on the season to .207 (6-of-29).

• Four Spartan freshmen (Daniel Russell, Karsen Dorwart, Tiernan Shoudy, and Matt Basgall) have combined for 21 points on the season so far (6-15-21), tied for fourth among Division I programs.  Michigan's seven freshmen have 16-29--45, followed by Union (7, 6-20-26), Minnesota (8, 11-11-22), and Boston University (5, 7-14-21).

•  MSU's top line accounted for 13 points against LIU last weekend.  Karsen Dorwart was the leading scorer for MSU on the weekend with a goal and four assists,  Jagger Joshua had three goals and an assist, and Daniel Russell had four assists. Joshua was named the Big Ten Third Star of the week.  Meanwhile, Russell leads the Spartans with a nine points this season, which ranks fourth in the Big Ten.  He is fourth nationally in points per game (1.50), third in assists per game (6, 1.00), and ranks second among freshmen in points.

•  Senior Nicolas Müller is third on the team in points (6), and has matched his statistical output from his junior campaign.  Muller played in his 100th career game against Bowling Green, and owns an active five-game point-scoring streak.  He scored his first goal of the season on Friday vs. LIU.  Müller is tied for eighth in the Big Ten in assists (5).

•  Dylan St. Cyr has played in five of MSU's six games this season, and owns a 2.03 GAA and .910 save percentage.  He ranks seventh  in the Big Ten in save percentage and is fourth in GAA.
St. Cyr spent four years (three seasons) at Notre Dame and then one at Quinnipiac (2021-22).  He returns to South Bend this weekend as a visitor, where he boasted a 2.44 GAA and .923 save percentage in 34 games his first three seasons.
